Harvester Ants

Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex spp.) have a two-segmented petiole, one pair of spines on the thorax, a painful sting, and many species have long hairs on their chins. In the Albuquerque area they are normally bright red or a dark and two-toned red. These ants make bare circular areas sometimes more than 12 feet across surrounding their nest and are happy to sting anyone who stands still  near them long enough. Their nests are often huge, with hundreds of underground chambers extending several feet into the earth. Harvesters collect seeds and plant material from great distances and store it in their nests
